Why does my business need it? From the single operator through to the largest corporate, it is smart business practice to ensure that your critical data is backed up regularly and stored in a safe place away from your place of business. Mobility, compactness of size drive our work practices toward a totally mobile office, but how often do we consider what the ramification of such work practices are to the ongoing success of our business.
Disasters such as power outages, fire, water damage, hard drive failure, vandalism, employee errors, sabotage or theft can put an immediate halt to your business. Many businesses don't realize the value of their data until it is too late.
Critical data loss can weaken a business severely to the point of bringing a business to a close, never recovering and re-opening its doors if all critical information has been lost. Losing just one day's worth of data could cost you hundreds or even thousands of dollars to re-create or re-enter. What would it "Cost You" if you lost a lifetime of your critical data, today?
A backup solution from OzBackup reduces these risks and the lessens the potential impact on your business.
There are five major categories of common failure can occur on any computer system. Some will occur more often than others. It makes sense to have a strategy that will protect against any one of these.
Disk Failure - If a hard drive on your system fails, there is a good chance that some or all of the data on that disk is destroyed. The rapid rise of mobile computing and the perils associated with mobile systems has resulted in more instances of this type of failure.
There are companies that specialize in reviving data off of a hard drive that has had a failure but this process can be a very costly option with a recent quote to recover data for one client being in excess of $7,000. Even if your data can be recovered, there is no guarantee of the integrity of the data contained in a recovered file!
System Failure - A system failure means that some part of your system's hardware or operating system software, other than a hard drive, fails. A system failure could be a processor failure, a problem with the mother board, or other problems that may cause a system to lock up. When a system ends abnormally, there may be data files that were partially updated, links between files that could be damaged, or damage to files that were in use at the time. Data problems caused in this type of failure may not be immediately obvious, sometimes only becoming noticeable some days after the "cause" has been forgotten.
Power Failure - Computers that experience a power loss will cause a system to end abnormally causing similar problems to those described under system failure to occur. Many companies install Uninterruptible Power Supplies to protect host and server systems, but rarely protect the computers of key positions or personnel. Mobile computers are generally powered via a battery and do not suffer from this category of failure.
Human Error or Program Failure - Conflicts can often occur between particular systems and software packages. Although developers and beta testers try to account for all problems, not all get caught and a program error can cause incorrect information in some of your data files.
People make mistakes too, a month end process might be run twice, duplicated batch entries may be entered. Someone could accidentally delete critical files and be unaware until reconciliation problems arise. A new version of software may introduce data problems leading to the re-running of process multiple times. Data loses or errors of this type may require restoring a previous backup and re-entering data, potentially a number of times.
Complete System Loss - The complete loss of a system could result from catastrophes such as: fire, flood, other natural disasters, theft or sabotage. This can happen to anybody, anytime, anywhere without warning and without regard to your backup procedures. It may be a disgruntled, or recently terminated employee who has access to systems or files and critical data who can cause a complete loss of a computer system.
To rebuild, a complete backup is needed to restore the system. Other alternatives is to keep off-site the original program disks that would require reinstallation, and a complete backup off-site of all critical data that would be required so as to avoid unnecessary re-entering of that data.
